Il Castello Visconteo è una fortificazione medioevale che sorge a sud di Legnano su un’isola naturale del fiume Olona. È conosciuto come Castrum Sancti Georgi (“castello di San Giorgio”) sin dal XIII secolo. Il complesso architettonico è situato in viale Toselli, fra il parco Castello e piazza I maggio. La presenza di un castello a Legnano è collegata alla funzione strategica che ebbe la città del Carroccio dal Medioevo al XVI secolo. Legnano si trovava, infatti, lungo un’importante via di comunicazione che collegava Milano al nord ovest della Lombardia.

Costruito dai Visconti, poi passò nelle mani dei Lampugnani e ancora dei Cornaggia; quest’ultimi lo vendettero al Comune di Legnano che lo riaprì nel 2007, dopo dei lavori di restauro.

The Visconti Castle is a medieval fortification that rises in south of Legnano on a natural island of the river Olona . It is known as Castrum Sancti Georgi ( ” Castle of San Giorgio ” ) since the 13th century. The architectural complex is situated in Viale Toselli , between Castle’s Park and Piazza I Maggio . The presence of a castle in Legnano is connected to the strategic function that had the city of the Northern League from the Middle Ages to the 16th century. Legnano is in fact located along an important road that linking Milan to the north west of Lombardy .

Built by the Visconti , then it passed into the hands of Lampugnani and still Cornaggia; the latter sold it to the City of Legnano which reopened in 2007 after the restoration work.
