La chiesa San Giovanni si trova in Via Liguria e Via Gramsci e fa parte della Parrocchia San Paolo.

Nel 1970  viene istituita la nuova Parrocchia di S.Paolo con sede in via Sardegna : la Parrocchia madre dei S.S.Martiri si occupò dell’acquisto del terreno e della costruzione di un prefabbricato con la chiesa e una sala riunioni. Nelle intenzioni sarebbe stata una struttura provvisoria, ma è ancora oggi la parrocchiale.
Contemporaneamente per agevolare gli abitanti del rione detto “del ponte” di via S.Bernardino, fino ad allora di competenza della parrocchia di S.Magno, il prevosto mons. Giuseppe Cantù incarica l’arch. Enrico Castiglioni di progettare una chiesa a loro più vicina. Il già noto professionista ci mette tutta la sua notevole creatività e nasce così il progetto della chiesa dedicata a S.Giovanni Battista.

Il 29.8.1971 è la data della posa della prima pietra benedetta dal Card. Giovanni Colombo. Viene quindi incaricata la ditta Saredi per la realizzazione di quel progetto avveniristico e nel settembre dello stesso anno vengono gettate le fondamenta. Successivamente, nell’ottobre 1973 la ditta appaltatrice è in difficoltà e alla nuova parrocchia mancano i fondi necessari, così i lavori vengono sospesi e i primi abbozzi di struttura diventano ben presto una squallida piscina. Il parroco fondatore don Romeo Maggioni costituisce una commissione che si riunisce al bar Poretti di via S.Bernardino (attuale sede della Chiesa Avventista del Settimo giorno).

Nel novembre del 1975, finalmente,  riprendono i lavori affidati all’impresa Cartabia e la chiesa arriva almeno al tetto. Nella Pasqua del 1976, in una chiesa ancora molto incompleta, su un tavolo posticcio, si celebra la Prima Messa, per la gioia di tutti i credenti della parrocchia.

Nel 1985 viene completato il campanile, senza campane, per iniziativa dell’allora parroco don Luigi Mascheroni. Nel 1993, in attesa del nuovo parroco, viene nominato Vicario temporaneo don Ambrogio Colnago, che segnala alla Curia di Milano lo stato di grave decadenza della chiesa. Al suo arrivo il parroco trova una relazione del tecnico inviato dalla Curia, il quale indica alcuni interventi urgenti per limitare le infiltrazioni d’acqua. Ma l’intervento necessario è di ben altra portata e l’economia parrocchiale non è in grado di affrontare una spesa importante.

Successivamente, nel 2010, la parrocchia riuscì a realizzare i lavori di ristrutturazione e rinnovamento della Chiesa rendendo omogenea l’architettura con tutto l’arredamento. Insomma, S. Giovanni è un piccolo gioiello, grazie alle sue vetrate colorate che rendono l’atmosfera molto magica e religiosa.

The 29/08/1971 is the date of the laying of the foundation stone blessed by Card. Giovanni Colombo. It is then charged Saredi the company for the construction of the futuristic project and in September of that year laying of the foundation. Subsequently, in October 1973 the contractor is in trouble and the new parish lacks the necessary funds, so the proceedings will be suspended and the first outline sketches soon become a dingy pool. The founding pastor, Fr. Romeo Maggioni is a committee that meets at the Poretti bar on Via San Bernardino (current headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church).

In November of 1975, at last, take up the work entrusted to the company Cartabia and the church reaches at least to the roof. In the Easter of 1976, in a still very incomplete church, on a fake table, we celebrate the first Mass, to the delight of all believers of the parish.

In 1985 he completed the bell tower without bells, on the initiative of the then parish priest Don Luigi Mascheroni. In 1993, waiting for the new parish priest, he was appointed temporary Vicar Fr Ambrose Colnago, which signals to the Curia of Milan it was the church of serious decline. On arrival, the parish priest is a technical report sent by the Curia, which indicates some urgent measures to limit water seepage. But the intervention needed is a radically different level and the parish economy is not able to deal with a major expense.

Subsequently, in 2010, the parish was able to realize the renovation and renewal of the Church making homogeneous architecture with all the furniture. In short, St John’s is a little gem, with its stained glass windows, giving it a magical and religious atmosphere.
