L’ex Sanatorio Santa Teresa si trova all’interno del parco ex I.L.A.. Essa è un’area verde compresa fra le vie Galileo Ferraris, Comacina e con l’ingresso principale presso via Colli di S. Erasmo. Prende il nome dall’Istituto Legnanese di Assistenza, che tra gli anni ’20 e gli anni ’60 curava i malati di tubercolosi. Fu inaugurato nel 1924 dalla Regina Margherita di Savoia, insieme al Sanatorio che prese il nome della Regina stessa.
Il complesso sanatoriale Regina Elena di Savoia venne edificato su iniziativa del Commissario Carlo Jucker del Cotonificio Cantoni nell’ambito delle iniziative sociali realizzate a Legnano a favore dei lavoratori. Costruito tra il 1920 e 1927, il complesso era di proprietà dell’ILA (Istituto Legnanese di Assistenza). Il Sanatorio aveva l’intento di marginare la diffusa tubercolosi ed il parco costituiva un elemento essenziale per la cura della malattia, combattuta attraverso il riposo all’aria salubre e con elioterapia.
Quest’area, ai piedi del colle S. Erasmo, venne scelta per la vicinanza all’Ospedale Civile e al centro della città, ma soprattutto per la disposizione altimetrica particolarmente favorevole che riparava il sito dai venti e per la libera esposizione al sole. L’area era inizialmente priva di piante, infatti, il parco venne realizzato contemporaneamente all’edificazione del Sanatorio con l’impianto di numerosi alberi. L’attività del Sanatorio venne interrotta nel 1979 con la cessazione dell’ILA nel 1981.
Il parco oggi è unico nel suo genere: costituisce un “bosco” nella città; è un giardino storico per le sue caratteristiche paesaggistiche; sono presenti due elementi architettonici e naturalistici da salvaguardare; è tutelato dalla Soprintendenza.
Inoltre, il Sanatorio è un vero e proprio pezzo di storia per la nostra città da salvaguardare. Ci sono diversi progetti che riguardano il Sanatorio, uno dei quali è quello di riqualificarlo e renderlo sede di un centro di ricerca scientifico.
