Piazza San Magno costituisce il centro della città, su cui si affaccia l’omonima Basilica. La piazza, nel corso degli anni, ha subito notevoli cambiamenti: gli ultimi durante l’estate del 2015, per la riqualificazione della “pedana” che si eleva al centro.
Ma com’era la Piazza prima?
All’inizio del ‘900 si presentava molto spoglia, solo la Basilica faceva da vero e proprio scenario; infatti, la piazza veniva utilizzata come sede del mercato fino ai primi anni ’30. Inizialmente fu inserita una fontana dedicata ai caduti e realizzata nel 1932 da Giannino Castiglioni, ma per rendere fruibile la piazza a tutti i mezzi, progettarono una rotatoria.
Con l’aumento del traffico la rotonda fu tolta, per dare spazio ad una piazza lastricata in mattoni ed agibile solo ai pedoni. Il 2004 è l’anno decisivo in cui venne stravolto l’aspetto della Piazza donandogli uno stile molto “contemporaneo”, se così si può definire. Il progetto prevedeva un pavimento lastricato in pietra chiara, lo spostamento della fontana dedicata ai caduti, ora di fronte al Cimitero Monumentale di Legnano, e una “pedana” con piccole fontanelle e orti con erbe aromatiche.
Le ultime modifiche risalgono all’estate dello scorso anno che, per motivi di manutenzione e salvaguardia, sono state applicate nel pavimento e nell’impianto di irrigazione. In particolare, hanno sostituito: la pavimentazione calpestabile in “rasocreta” (un impasto in pietrisco e ghiaia con resine polimeriche trasparenti); le piantine sono state sistemate e diminuite, con l’impianto d’irrigazione inserito nel pavimento sottostante e le fontanelle sono state tolte. Tutti questi interventi non hanno di certo una finalità estetica, ma di puro risparmio per il Comune.
Di certo, ieri, la piazza aveva un suo fascino e raccontava la storia della propria Città, ma oggi?

All these actions have certainly not an aesthetic purpose , but of pure savings in ” pockets ” of the City .
Certainly , yesterday, the square had its own charm and told the story of their city , but today ?
