Il Cotonificio Cantoni è stata un’azienda tessile attiva tra il 1828 ed il 1985 ed è stata per lungo tempo la maggiore società cotoniera italiana. Nata nel 1828, per volontà della famiglia Cantoni, si sviluppò lungo il fiume Olona, sfruttando tutti i suoi benefici. L’attività industriale si basava sul settore tessile, divenendo una delle fabbriche più potenti economicamente.

Lo sviluppo maggiore si ebbe nel corso del XX secolo, in particolare nel primo ventennio del ‘900. La Cantoni si estese non solo a Legnano, ma anche in alcune città Lombarde dell’Altomilanese. Infatti, l’attività di filatura crebbe soprattutto grazie all’energia ricavata dal fiume Olona per far funzionare i macchinari.

L’attività proseguì in modo costante, ma con delle innovazioni nei materiali e nei macchinari che divennero sempre più funzionali. Purtroppo, a partire dal secondo dopo guerra, le sorti dell’azienda andarono sempre peggio, chiudendo i battenti nel 1985. Da allora l’area fu abbandonata a sé stessa e al degrado.

La Soprintendenza ai Beni Culturali e al Paesaggio di Milano, nel 2003, si occupò dell’area, di cui una gran parte degli edifici era stata demolita, lasciando le uniche due pareti architettonicamente importanti affacciate su Corso Sempione. Nel 2004 il progetto di riqualificazione dell’area fu completato, trasformando quello che era il Cotonificio Cantoni in un centro commerciale “Galleria Cantoni”.
