La Torre Colombera è un edificio storico di Legnano ed è l’unica costruzione giunta a noi della Legnano quattrocentesca. È inglobata in tra corso Garibaldi e via Del Gigante, nei pressi della chiesa di San Domenico. Conosciuta anche come “La Colombera”, deve il suo nome ad uno degli impieghi che nel passato erano spesso svolti in strutture simili, vale a dire l’allevamento dei colombi.

La Torre Colombera venne edificata a metà del XV secolo come casa di caccia della famiglia nobiliare dei Lampugnani. L’edificio, di forma torreggiante, è strutturato in due piani. Nel 1934 Guido Sutermeister si accorse che le pareti interne dell’edificio erano un tempo abbellite da affreschi, che erano però quasi del tutto scomparsi già all’epoca. I due locali al piano superiore erano infatti decorati, rispettivamente, da raffigurazioni collegate alla storia romana ed alla vita contadina. Il piano terra era invece ornato da affreschi riproducenti gli stemmi di alcune famiglie nobiliari dell’epoca (Lampugnani, Sesti, Visconti, Annoni, Porro e Arconti); questi emblemi erano poi inseriti all’interno di motivi decorativi. Tali affreschi furono probabilmente dipinti da Gian Giacomo Lampugnani.

I resti di queste pitture vennero in un primo momento staccati dalla pareti, per poi essere ricollocati nella Torre Colombera nei punti originari insieme a degli affreschi che provenivano da alcuni palazzi rinascimentali legnanesi e che furono salvati da Guido Sutermeister. Gli edifici nobiliari da cui provenivano queste pitture furono infatti demoliti tra gli anni trenta e gli anni settanta del XX secolo.

Gli affreschi, che vennero dipinti in periodo compreso tra il XV ed il XVII secolo, furono collocati nella Torre Colombera nel 1990, cioè dopo la ristrutturazione dell’edificio. Con il passare del tempo questo edificio cambiò di proprietà e diventò, infine, la residenza di contadini, i quali non si curarono di conservare gli ambienti di pregio cagionando quindi la decadenza degli edifici stessi e, di conseguenza, anche il deterioramento delle pitture.

Attualmente, oltre agli affreschi originari, all’interno della Colombera si possono ammirare i dipinti rinascimentali provenienti da edifici cittadini demoliti nel corso del Novecento.

The Columbarium Tower is a historic building in Legnano and is the only building come down to us of the fifteenth Legnano. It is incorporated in between Corso Garibaldi and Via Del Gigante, near the church of San Domenico. Also known as “The Columbarium”, it owes its name to one of the jobs that in the past were often carried out in similar structures , namely the breeding of pigeons.

La Colombera tower was built in the mid- fifteenth century as a hunting lodge of the noble family of Lampugnani. The building, towering shape, is divided into two floors. In 1934 Guido Sutermeister noticed that the interior walls of the building were once decorated with frescoes, which were, however, almost completely disappeared even then. The two rooms on the upper floor were in fact decorated, respectively, from representations linked to the Roman history and country life. The ground floor was instead decorated with frescoes reproducing the coats of arms of some noble families of the time (Lampugnani, Sixth, Visconti, Annoni, Leek and Archons); these emblems were then inserted into decorative motifs . These murals were probably painted by Gian Giacomo Lampugnani.

The remains of these paintings were initially detached from the walls, and then be replaced in Colombera tower in the original points with the frescoes that came from some Renaissance palaces Legnanesi and who were saved by Guido Sutermeister. The noble buildings from which these paintings were in fact demolished in the thirties and the seventies of the twentieth century.

The frescoes, which were painted in the period between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, were placed in Torre Colombera in 1990 , ie after the renovation of the building. With the passage of time this building changed ownership and became, finally, the residence of peasants, who did not take care to preserve the settings of value, thus causing the decay of the buildings themselves and, consequently, the deterioration of the paintings.

Currently, in addition to the original frescoes, inside the Colombera you can admire the Renaissance paintings from public buildings demolished during the twentieth century.
