Il 2 ottobre del 1921 è la data ufficiale dell’inaugurazione dello stadio comunale Giovanni Mari, costruito in via Pisacane con un incontro di avvio di campionato in serie A, contro l’inter; tutto ciò non poteva che iniziare meglio, con una schiacciante vittoria di 6 a 0 per i “Lilla”. La costituzione ufficiale della squadra di calcio A.C Legnano risale al 1 gennaio 1913, ma già nel 1906 vi erano stati i primi tentativi di allestimento della squadra.

Dopo i primi successi si posero le basi per la costruzione di uno stadio sui terreni della Franco Tosi a ridosso del complesso industriale. L’amministrazione comunale, insieme all’aiuto di altre industrie, avviò l’opera e fissò l’inaugurazione, appunto, il 2 ottobre. Il nuovo stadio era accogliente e rispecchiava le esigenze del pubblico Lilla, con due tribune coperte e capienti.

Il momento dell’inaugurazione fu molto atteso dai tifosi e da tutta la città: con una bottiglia di spumante infranta contro il palo di una porta; successivamente, i giocatori dovevano raccogliere i pezzi di vetro prima del fischio d’inizio.

Con il passare degli anni e con l’aumento della popolazione, si riscontrarono nuove esigenze, poiché i posti a sedere erano molto limitati, quindi si pensò di ampliare le tribune in linea opposte a quelle coperte e la ristrutturazione di quest’ultime. Lo stadio, oltre ad avere un utilizzo calcistico, è stato destinato anche per un fine paliesco. Infatti, a maggio di ogni anno, viene allestito e preparato per poter correre il Palio di Legnano. Per questo motivo è stata inserita un’ulteriore tribuna in acciaio.

Lo stadio di Legnano vanta una storia importante, soprattutto perché moltissimi giocatori di rilievo vi hanno giocato. Inoltre, per i legnanesi è diventato un vero e proprio simbolo cittadino.

Over the years and with the increase of the population , they were encountered new requirements , since the seats were very limited, so it was decided to expand the stands in opposite line to those covered and the restructuring of the latter . The stadium , in addition to having a football use , was also intended for an end its Palio . In fact , in May of each year , it is set up and ready to run the Palio di Legnano . For this reason it has been inserted an additional grandstand steel .

The Legnano stadium boasts an important history, especially because many prominent players have played there. In addition, for Legnanesi it has become a real symbol of the city.
